  • Handy Free Programs - Windows

    • 7-Zip - Excellent free Open Source compression ("zip") program. Very easy to use. Works with many formats including ZIP, 7Z, GZIP, BZIP2 and TAR. Get 7-Zip Get 7-Zip
    • GIMP - Excellent free Open Source image editing program. Does nearly everything Photoshop does. (If you have Photoshop, you won't need GIMP.) To resize an image, "File | Open" the image in GIMP, then right-click anywhere on the image. Choose "Image | Scale Image" in the right-click menu to get the scaling window open. Fill in the new desired dimensions, then click on the Scale button in the window. To save an optimized copy of the image suitable for use on the Web, choose "File | Save As" and you will be asked about compression in the saving process. A .jpg quality = 30 is usually good for photos. Highly recommended. GIMP - Free Get GIMP
    • Inkscape - Open Source vector graphics editor, with capabilities similar to Illustrator, CorelDraw, or Xara X, using the W3C standard Scalable Vector Graphics (SVG) file format. Can import Illustrator .ai files. Also for Linux and Mac OSX. Get Inkscape free Get Inkscape
    • AbiWord - Good free Open Source word processor. Works with many formats including MS Word .doc files. Get AbiWord free Get AbiWord
    • Notepad++ - Excellent free text editor, like a very fast version of Notepad on steroids, but much better. Works for many programming and markup languages too, including HTML and PHP. Highly recommended.
    • Crimson Editor - Excellent fast, free text editor. Works for many programming and markup languages too, including XHTML and PHP. Also allows cutting and and pasting of vertical columns of text.
    • FileZilla - Excellent free FTP client. Used for transferring files to and from a remote server such as a web server.
    • PrimoPDF - Excellent free PDF file generator. Works like a printer. To make a PDF file, just print to PrimoPDF.
    • Virtual Magnifying Glass - Excellent, free, customizable on-screen magnifier. To start magnifying, click on the magnifier mini-icon in the system tray; to exit magnifying mode, click anywhere on the screen; to customize, right-click on the icon in the system tray.
    • Adeona - Free, Open Source laptop and desktop computer tracker. Adeona is the first Open Source system for tracking the location of your lost or stolen laptop that does not rely on a proprietary, central service. This means that you can install Adeona on your laptop and go there's no need to rely on a single third party. What's more, Adeona addresses a critical privacy goal different from existing commercial offerings. It is privacy-preserving. This means that no one besides the owner (or an agent of the owner's choosing) can use Adeona to track a laptop.
    • Zoho - Excellent free web-based office software. Work online. Zoho has many applications including word processor, spreadsheet, and much more.
    • Google Docs - Free web-based word processor, spreadsheet, and more.
    • Fourmilab.ch's Base64 Encoder/Decoder - Excellent free decoder for those occasional Base64-encoded files in email; or try this: free online Base64 encoder/decoder.
    • Free PHP program to count the number of pixels of each non-transparent color in a .png image file. Output goes to your browser; paste from there into a spreadsheet for analysis. Originally used to calculate percentage of forest and grassland coverage for the WRCVFD fire district from USGS maps. Use freely, giving credit where due. Developed in support of a USSTC grant application for USSTC's Operation Ranger Program for 2008.
    • get Avery software Avery Design Pro - free software with templates for Avery labels and other products.
    • digestIT 2004 - free MD5 and SHA-1 hash code generator and checker. A file often comes supplied with a hash code so you can better know whether it has been compromised. This program, which integrates into Windows Explorer, makes checking a hash just a right-click away.
    • Color Contrast Analyzer - free program that checks color contrast to assist in accessible web development.
  • Handy Free Programs - Web Browsing and Internet Use

    • Firefox - Award-winning free web browser. Especially safe when used with the NoScript add-on, below.
    • NoScript = excellent security add-on for Firefox browser. This free, open source add-on allows JavaScript and Java execution only for trusted domains of your choice. Once installed, you can control the running of scripts in your browser by left-clicking on the NoScript icon in the status bar or by right-clicking on the browser page, then choosing NoScript from the menu.
    • Web Developer - excellent add-on for Firefox. Not just for developers! Gives you handy information and control over many browsing features.
    • Netcraft Toolbar - free anti-phishing, anti-fraud toolbar browser add-in.
    • Color Management Add-on for Firefox 3 - free add-on that makes photos and graphics look their very best using embedded color profiles.
    • PeerGuardian 2 - Excellent free IP blocker for safer Internet use.
    • Nmap Security Scanner - Free and open source (license) utility for network exploration or security auditing. Many systems and network administrators also find it useful for tasks such as network inventory, managing service upgrade schedules, and monitoring host or service uptime. Nmap uses raw IP packets in novel ways to determine what hosts are available on the network, what services (application name and version) those hosts are offering, what operating systems (and OS versions) they are running, what type of packet filters/firewalls are in use, and dozens of other characteristics. It was designed to rapidly scan large networks, but works fine against single hosts. Nmap runs on all major computer operating systems, and both console and graphical versions are available. Available for Windows, Max OS X, and Linux, among others. For advanced users.
    • GNU Privacy Guard - Complete and free implementation of the OpenPGP standard as defined by RFC4880. GnuPG allows to encrypt and sign your data and communication, features a versatile key managment system as well as access modules for all kind of public key directories. GnuPG, also known as GPG, is a command line tool with features for easy integration with other applications. A wealth of frontend applications and libraries are available... Project Gpg4win provides a Windows version of GnuPG. For advanced users.
  • Handy Programs - Mac

    • Cyberduck - Free Open Source FTP client.
    • TextMate - Text Editor ($63). Extremely powerful text-editor, useful for multiple markup languages. It's not free, but its powerful feature allowing search and replace across multiple files is worth it for larger sites.
    • Color Contrast Analyzer - free program that checks color contrast to assist in accessible web development.
