  • December 13, 2007 Volunteer Recognition Dinner

    December 13, 2007: The annual WRCVFD Volunteer Recognition Dinner was held on Thursday evening in Station #1 on Pumphouse Road, Rockwood. Festivities started at 7 PM and ran all evening. Volunteers made fried turkey, smoked turkey, and many other delicious dishes filled the buffet tables. The organization had a record turn-out; the fire hall was full, all the chairs and plates were taken, and the feast had no leftovers. Decorations, by volunteers Tom van Dalen, Kate Antone, and helpers, were impressive. The poinsettas, lights, tree, candle centerpieces, and plates warmly enlivened this year's blue-and-silver wintry snowman theme. Santa attended, and gave each child safety-related presents, including LED flashlights and donated colorful fleece blankets.

    Along with the festive fellowship, the dinner was business too; FireFighters and First Responders were honored. FireFighter of the Year Julie Dvorak was formally given her award, and other volunteers were recognized for achieving training and certifications.

    • Chris Jones recently completed Paramedic School. He now is a licensed Paramedic, State Certified.
    • Clint Redwine recently became Firefighter Level 1, State Certified.
    • The following firefighters completed Emergency Medical Responder (First Responder) training. All have passed the state testing and the National Registry Test:
      • Julie Dvorak;
      • Stephen Koren;
      • Victor Zammit;
      • Eric Cox.

    More photos of the dinner will be released soon.

  • October 20, 2007 Safety Day

    October 20, 2007: October is National Fire Safety Month, and Safety Day for Roane County was held on Saturday from 9 PM to 1 PM in the Highway 27 Wal-Mart parking lot. This was our first Safety Day in a while; although Safety Day is an annual event held on the third Saturday in October, it was rained out in 2005 and 2006. This year we had beautiful weather and West Roane County Volunteer Fire Department was there in force. Our display had a fire truck, Firefighters, posters, and safety literature. Other Roane County fire departments and emergency services participated as well. A good time was had by all.

  • October 13, 2007 Open House and Live Fire Training

    October 13, 2007: A good time was had by everyone at our Open House at West Roane County Volunteer Fire Department Station #1 on Pumphouse Road (see map). The Open House, which had fun, community, and education for All, was held on Saturday, October 13, 2007, from 9 AM on. October has special significance to firefighters: October is National Fire Safety Month and October 8-13 was National Fire Prevention Week.

    At the Open House there were activities for the whole family, including live demonstrations, live bluegrass music, barbeque to eat, blue reflective street number signs, and more. Community members of all ages met with Firefighters, socialized with their neighbors, learned more about fire safety, and enjoyed a perfect fall day!

    There was an exciting extra treat. The Putnam County Live Fire Training Trailer was there for Live Fire Training for Firefighters, who in their turn-out gear fought controlled fires in the special trailer.

    See the three Live Fire Training and Open House albums in our photos section: photos by Anne Sloan, photos by Tom van Dalen, and photos by Paul Antone.

    One volunteer, Tom van Dalen, also made a beautiful colorful wooden donations box in the shape of a fire truck for the occasion.

  • October 11, 2007 United Way Agency Fair

    October 12, 2007: The United Way Fair held October 11, 2007 from 11 AM to 2 PM outside Wal-Mart on Highway 27 was a success! WRCVFD participated along with representatives from other United Way Partner Agencies. We were there in force with a fire truck and Firefighters in turn-out gear. We passed out brochures about WRCVFD, winter heating safety tips, emergency escape plans, and Fire Prevention Week, in addition to coloring books and fliers with open burning and burning permit information, emergency escape planning guides, escape plan coloring sheets, and more. We also provided informative signs and posters on these topics. Visitors were encouraged to attend our upcoming free Open House at Station No. 1 on on October 13.

    Photos of the Fair are now available in our Photos section. Many thanks are due to the volunteers who made our participation in the Fair possible.

  • September 8, 2007 Inventory and Work Day

    Our Inventory and Clean-up Work Day on Saturday, September 8, 2007 was a success. It was partly held at West Roane County Volunteer Fire Department Station #1 on Pumphouse Road (see map). Activities started at 8 AM and will continued until the inventory was done.

    At the same time, other volunteers worked on the plumbing over at the building site for the new Station #3.

  • Fireworks Sale

    June to July 5, 2007: Our first Fireworks Sale was held in a tent in the Wal-Mart parking lot. In addition to support from the community, a large team of volunteers made the sale a success. [Note that fireworks were provided by TNT; we provided volunteer labor in return for a donation from the vendor.] Activities included:

Building and painting huge reuseable signs.

Setting up and staffing the tent, and cleaning up afterward. All this was a huge job since the tent had to be staffed 24 hours a day. See the 2007 fireworks sale photo album!

Distributing fireworks safety information to every visitor during the sale. Our safety efforts even made the Channel 10 news in Knoxville.

Many thanks to all our supporters and members for their attendance, donations, and hard work.
