  • Memorial Service for Dr. Charlie Grandison Charlie Mead

West Roane County Volunteer Fire Department is deeply sorrowed by the passing of our dear friend Dr. Charles Grandison Charlie Mead (1933-2009). He passed away peacefully at home on Monday morning, June 22, 2009, at 2:58 AM.

In accordance with Charlie's wishes, his body has been sent to the University of Tennessee Forensic Research Center in Knoxville, Tennessee. Research was very important to Charlie.

Charlie Mead was a good friend and neighbor, a tireless volunteer and board chairman, and a devoted husband, father, and grandfather. He will be greatly missed.

The family will be receiving friends at the West Roane VFD Station No. 1 at 1303 Pumphouse Road in Rockwood, Tennessee, on Monday, June 29, 2009, from 5:30 to 7:30 PM, followed by a memorial service at 7:30 PM, also at Station No. 1. The family has requested that in lieu of flowers, donations may be made in Charlie's memory to the WRCVFD at PO Box 417, Rockwood, TN 38754.

More information is available on his obituary page here at WestRoane.com and in the OakRidger and Knoxville News Sentinel newspapers.

  • WRCVFD Fireworks Sale June 25 - July 4

West Roane County Volunteer Fire Department is holding its "Fireworks Sale," this year in the parking lot of Wal-Mart on Highway 27 in Roane County. The sale will be open all day and all evening

There are for-profit fireworks tents around, but this one is the only one that benefits our West Roane VFD. If you are buying fireworks this year, make sure to get them from the hardworking volunteers in your fire department.

Volunteers are needed to help with the sale, security at night, and with finishing up on July 5. This is a great way to socialize and get to meet your neighbors while giving service too! For more information, call 354-5140 or 354-1500.

Remember to always use caution around fireworks. West Roane County VFD provides fireworks safety tips and downloadable brochures in its Fireworks Safety section.

  • United Way Family Fun Day May 30 at Roane State

A United Way Family Fun Day was held on May 30 from 11 AM to 4 PM at Roane State Community College. All ages were welcome; admission was free.

Fun activities, including children's inflatables, face painting, a petting zoo, children's book giveaways, games, and the West Roane County Volunteer Fire Department-sponsored Live Burn Trailer Training, took place throughout the day.

Many local groups were in attendance, including the Girl and Boy Scouts, Second Harvest Food Bank, CASA, Michael Dunn Center, the Salvation Army, West Roane VFD, and more.

The event was preceded by a 5k CASA run at 9 AM and a 1k walk.

The Live Burn Trailer Training was particularly exciting. West Roane VFD also gave out safety information, coloring pages for children, and quite a few free smoke alarms spread throughout the day.

  • Relay for Life Friday, May 15, 2009

The American Cancer Society's Relay For Life is Friday, May 15. This is their annual national fundraiser. WRCVFD volunteers will be setting up at the Renaissance tent (formerly Marshall Voss Health Care). WRCVFD will be located immediately on the left upon entering the faculty parking lot (the lower parking lot) of Roane State Community College.

Volunteers will need to be there by 5:15 PM if possible. If others can come later when they get off work that is fine. Volunteers do not have to stay the entire time. Please dress neatly and if possible wear some type of WRCVFD clothing such as t-shirt, dress uniform, or cap if you have it.

Volunteer firefighters should bring fire gear in case WRCVFD gets a call. Please let WRCVFD chaplain Bruce Foster know if you are planning on helping by emailing bruce_em805@bellsouth.net or calling at (865) 466-9147.

Most volunteers' lives have been touched by cancer and so has the Department.

Volunteers performed all tasks, including pickups of donated items, signage, cleanup, decorations, publicity, and staffing the yard sale. Many thanks to all who helped through donations or volunteering.

A large part of the annual WRCVFD budget comes from donations so community support for the Yard Sale is much appreciated.

  • Arson Awareness Week May 3-9: Arson for Profit

The losses from arson are staggering! There are many motives for arson, the crime of deliberately and maliciously setting fire. One particular type of arson - arson for profit, or economic arson - is the theme for this year’s Arson Awareness Week, May 3-9. Arson for Profit occurs when businesses or individuals set fires to reduce financial loss, recoup initial investments, and dispose of depreciated assets usually for a payout from insurance companies. Referring to all types of arson, the Insurance Information Institute indicates that arsonists destroyed nearly $900 million in insured property and killed 295 civilians nationwide in 2007 alone.

  • King Day of Service: A National Day to Volunteer:
A Recruitment Day for West Roane VFD

January 19, 2009: This year's M. L. King, Jr. Day of Service is a day on, not a day off here at WRCVFD. King Day is an excellent time to give something extra back to the community. Remember that no one is too old or too young to start helping.

To find out more on this Day of Service about volunteer opportunities at WRCVFD, call 354-3116 to speak with a volunteer. Or, any other day call Station #1 at 354-8201 or Charlie Mead at 354-1993. Or see: Volunteer Opportunities.

You may also view our event listing at USAService.org.

WRCVFD is one of hundreds of organizations in states and cities nationwide to honor the legacy of Dr. King. In 1994, Congress passed the King Holiday and Service Act, directing the King Center and the Corporation for National and Community Service to carry out a day of service reflecting Dr. King's life and teachings.

David Eisner, chief executive officer of the Corporation for National and Community Service, said, Martin Luther King said, Everybody can be great, because everybody can serve. We honor the life and legacy of Dr. King by doing things that help others and strengthen communities.
