  • New GPS Unit

August 22: Chief Charlie Redwine reports that West Roane County Volunteer Fire Department has acquired a new hand-held Global Positioning System (GPS) unit. The unit will be used whenever a GPS is needed, for example for marking Medical Helicopter Landing Zones. The unit is now located on Engine One, driver's side door pocket. We also still have the other GPS unit on Attack One.

GPS is a satellite-based positioning system. Orbiting satellites (called Space Vehicles) circle the earth at intervals. For more information, see: Global Positioning System.

The new GPS unit was donated by Stephen Koren. Thank you, Steve!

  • Our New Alternate Domain Name: WestRoane.com

August 22: Visitors to this web site now have a new, optional way of getting here, a alternate domain name: www.westroane.com. This accesses the exact same web pages as www.wrcvfd.com, but uses a name that is easier to pronounce and easier to spell.

The new domain name was donated by a supporter who said, I got tired of having to spell the whole thing out. Of course you may continue using the familiar www.wrcvfd.com name as well.

  • Open House at Station #1 October 13, 2007

August 22: Come one, come all to our Open House at West Roane County Volunteer Fire Department Station #1 on Pumphouse Road (see map) on Saturday, October 13, 2007. That month is National Fire Safety Month, and that week is National Fire Prevention Week.

At the Open House there will be activities for the whole family. Younger folks will enjoy meeting the firefighters. Come meet your neighbors, learn more about fire safety, and have a good time!

There will be an extra treat. According to Chief Charlie Redwine, Per Captain Brandon Burke, the Putnam County Live Fire Training Trailer has been scheduled to be here at our Open House on October 13th, 2007.

  • Reminder: Volunteers Needed September 8, 2007 for Station #1 Inventory and Work Day

August 22, 2007: All are invited to our Inventory and Clean-up Work Day on Saturday, September 8, 2007 at West Roane County Volunteer Fire Department Station #1 on Pumphouse Road (see map).

Activities start at 8 AM and will continue until the work is done. Wear comfortable work clothes. Don't worry if you have never volunteered before; there will be plenty of folks happy to lend you a helping hand. Don't worry if you can't arrive right at 8AM; of course early is better, but just show up! Come support your Volunteer Fire Department and have some fun too.

  • Tell-A-Friend Feature Added to Web Site

A new Tell A Friend feature is now available on this site. This lets you easily email friends to tell them about this site. Enter your name, your email address, and your friends names and email addresses, and the email will be sent.

Privacy advocates will be happy to know that the names and addresses you enter here are not stored and are not used for any other purpose.

To find the Tell A Friend feature, click on the Tell A Friend link in the upper right of each page, or look it up in our Site Map, or go directly to www.wrcvfd.com/index.php?p=tellafriend.

  • Internship Opening at WRCVFD for Pellissippi State Student

At the suggestion of Charlie Mead, WRCVFD is working with Michael Tomlinson at Pellissippi State Technical Community College to try to find an intern to help with our web site and who in return will get college credit and learn more about real-world web design and programming. The internship would be web- and phone-based and could be performed remotely.

The internship would be under the direction of an Associate Member, who would be expected to oversee the student's progress and provide the college with two formal evaluations per term. The new intern, should the position be filled, will have an opportunity to learn XHTML, CSS, PHP, design for accessibility, preparation of web graphics, and techniques for web security.

A prospective intern should have some experience with making web pages using at least HTML, be attentive to detail, have access to a computer and the Internet, and preferably have an excellent command of written English.

Our last intern, Paulina Thomas, did an excellent first incarnation of this web site back in 2004 using HTML 4.
