  • Man Down / Mayday Training on February 5

    January 27, 2008: A Man Down / Mayday Training Class is being given Tuesday, February 5, 2008, at 5:30 PM. The class will be held at the Roane County Emergency Services Training Center on Highway 27 north of Harriman on the right at the former Tennessee National Guard Armory. Dan King, the instructor, is Harriman Fire Department's training officer and East Tennessee Region Coordinator for the State Commission on Firefighting. Bring turn-out gear.

  • United Way Poverty Awareness Training Application Deadline is February 14

    January 27, 2008: A United Way Poverty Awareness Training workshop is being held Tuesday, February 26, 2008, from 9:00 AM to 4:00 PM. The workshop, provided by provided by the Roane County School Department and Roane County United Way, is designed for volunteers and others who work with those in need, including Fire Fighters and First Responders.

    Registration deadline for the workshop is Thursday, February 14, 2008. In case of inclement weather, the workshop will be held on Tuesday, March 4, 2008, instead. Note that in the event Roane County schools are cancelled, this class will be cancelled too.

    The workshop, based on the Framework for Understanding Poverty training used by Roane County School Department staff, will be conducted by Joe Parker, Ed.D., Supervisor of Special Programs for Roane County schools. Training materials were developed by Ruby Payne, Ph.D., a leading expert.

    The workshop is being held at Roane County United Way, 2735 Roane State Highway, Harriman, TN, in the Rescue Squad Building on Highway 70 across from the drive-in theater. Park and enter at rear of building. To register, call 865-882-7711. There is no charge for the workshop and lunch will be provided.

  • Online Courses Completed

    January 27, 2008: Volunteer C. Sloan completed the following short courses:

    • Inspection and Testing of Water-Based Fire Protection Systems from Michigan State University School of Criminal Justice.
    • Continuity of Operations (COOP) Awareness (IS-546) and Introduction to Continuity of Operations (COOP) (IS-547), completing the 2-course FEM 154 sequence; Radiological Emergency Management (IS-00003, FEM 115); and An Orientation to Community Disaster Exercises (IS-120, FEM 103), all from FEMA Emergency Management Institute for college credit.
    • Writing Effective Grant Proposals from the University of Tennessee Knoxville at outreach.utk.edu.
