Additional information: In 1909 the population of Knoxville was growing very quick, there were plenty of opportunities for working folks. Just west of downtown Knoxville was a new suburb called
Mechanicsville.
The powers that be at that time decided there should be a fire station in this new area to protect the people and their property. On May 23, 1909, Fire Station #5 opened its doors for business. Please join us to celebrate 100 years of service to the community and rededicate this beautiful building for hopefully another hundred years. The 1907 American-LaFrance steamer pulled by retired Captain, Tommy Gilliland’s Percheron horses will be an attraction, along with Fire Department Historian retired Captain Jack Lewis who will be on hand to answer questions from the public.
The Mechanicsville Association will have an ensemble playing music and refreshments will be available for all. If you love Knoxville History, you don’t want to miss this.
