Wilderness First ResponderJanuary 20-27-At the Great Smoky Mountains Institute in Tremont. Taught by Roane State instructors. Professional-level CPR training is a prerequisite. There are 78 hours of instruction total in field and classroom. Completion of this course makes you eligible to take the national EMT certification exam. There is no specialized Wilderness First Responder certification. Passing the exam qualifies you as a First Responder. Fee: $820 not including books. Some financial aid available. Poverty Awareness Training

9 AM-4 PMJoe Parker, Ed.D., Supervisor of Special Programs with the Roane County Schools will conduct this workshop based on the Framework for Understanding Poverty training that is utilized by the staff of our school system. The materials used were developed by Ruby Payne, Ph.D., a leading expert on this topic. This workshop is designed for volunteers and others who work with those in need. Location: Roane County United Way, 2735 Roane State Highway, Harriman, TN, in the Rescue Squad Building on Highway 70 across from the drive-in theater. Park and enter at rear of building. To register, call 865-882-7711. There is no charge; lunch will be provided. This program is being provided by Roane County Schools and the Roane County United Way. Registration deadline is Thursday, February 14th. In case of inclement weather, alternate date will be Tuesday, March 4. If Roane County Schools are cancelled, the class will be cancelled. Like Class 01 above plus: This 16-hour basic class fulfills the Basic Chaplain's Academy requirement for Chaplain Certification. The class covers: The Emergency Service Worker Personality; Introduction to the Incident Management System; Confidentiality; Chaplain Service Protocols; Emergency Service Funerals; An Introduction to CISM; Chaplain Service Mutual Aid; Chaplain Safety; and Establishing a Support Network. This course is open to all Chaplains: Fire; EMS; & Rescue. To be eligible to receive certification as a Fire Chaplain: attendees must be members of Tennessee Federation of Fire Chaplains or must complete membership prior to the conference. However: membership is not required to be able to attend this course. Chaplains must attend from 8:00 AM until 5:00 PM both days to complete the course.

This class will involve classroom and outside hands-on activities. Students will be taught rescue ropes/knots and will apply these techniques during this course.
40 Map & Compass Refresher / Introduction to Track Awareness" "" "Like Class 01 above plus: Students should be physically fit and equipped for a search and rescue field response. Map & Compass: This hands-on workshop will enable the student to become proficient in the basic components of map and compass skills. Introduction to Track Awareness: This course will introduce the skills of tracking-the art of following a trail of an animal or human by reading the signs left behind along their path.
